To What Are You Committed?

By Chris Wahl

As a leader, your commitments are the vehicles that carry you forward. Expanding on that idea, as a person living your life, your commitments carry you forward. To what are you committed? How much time do you spend paying attention to your commitments? What outcomes do you notice when you pay attention to your commitments?

There is no doubt that some of your commitments are easy for you to articulate. Most people can say that they are committed to being professional, doing the right thing, making decisions for the greater good. What else are you committed to?

Note that you may also be involved in commitments that may not be conscious - yet they are easy for others to see because they see you spending time on them. What are these commitments?

Reflection

This week, at work, notice what you are committed to. Notice what evokes your energy. Notice what gets your attention and your time. Behind your energy, attention, and time are your commitments. If you discover that you are "committed" to things that do not seem right for you, it may be time for a new look at what is important to you.
